CHAPTER SIXTEEN
TIME-OUT
Gray couldnât catch up with Lina; he didnât have the strength. He hadnât eaten in far too long, he was aching from Kressâs blows, and he bled from cuts all over his back where the glass on the floor had stabbed into him when he fell. To the physical injuries was added the mental confusion caused by being jerked from the school hallway to this unknown and dismal place, a place as close to nowhere as anything heâd ever seen.
His steps slowed, stopped. He looked around. The surface on which he stood was solid, dull gray, and so featureless it was impossible to tell whether it was stone, metal, or something else. He bent and ran a finger over it, but touch told him no more than sight. It felt cool with a slight roughness but no distinguishing texture.
That featureless floor provided his only link to reality. He saw no walls, no ceiling, only empty space around and above him. Whether that space stretched to infinity or enclosed him in an invisible bubble, he could not say. His outstretched arms encountered no obstacle; he could walk in any direction and nothing changed.
He no longer had any idea in which direction the others had gone, how he could find them, or whether he wanted to.
He should consider himself well rid of them. Except that it was lonely here. In the abandoned school heâd had recognizable surroundings, objects he could touch, rooms and hallways and stairs and doors. Here he had nothing, no one but himself.
âWeâll see how much I like my own company,â he said, in an attempt at grim humor.
It didnât take him long to decide he didnât like it at all. Heâd welcome any company, even Oryonâs. Or Kressâs.
Demon and all? he asked himself wryly.
He began to wonder whether Kressâs attack had left him mortally wounded and his belief that the others had come here with him had been no more than a dying dream. He would have expected more of a transition between life and death, but what did he know?
He poked and prodded at himself. His body felt solid. A pinch hurt. He stretched his arm behind him to feel the wounds on his back and yelped with pain; his fingers came back stained with blood. He must be alive.
Well, if he was alive, he had better find a way out of this place. When heâd thought of his life as empty, he hadnât known what emptiness was. And when heâd avoided people, he hadnât known what it was to be completely alone. Heâd thought heâd learned when he was lost in the deserted school building. The isolation had made him resolve to work with Oryon.
If only heâd kept that resolve. He might have, but for Lina. The catgirl had angered him and made him forget his promise.
But he had cooperated with both of them when Kress attacked. And where had it gotten him? Here!
How had Kress gotten free?
Someone had to know how to find the hidden room heâd been kept in.
